Alan Duane Bolinger Jr., known to many as Al, Pappy, or simply Dad, of Robertsdale, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on December 19, 2025, at the age of 71 after a long and courageous battle with multiple sclerosis. Born on June 22, 1954, in Huntington, Pennsylvania, Alan was the son of the late Alan and Lottie Bolinger.
Alan lived life by his own rules—strong-willed, fiercely independent, and never shy to speak his mind. Those who knew him best can attest to his trademark stubbornness, quick wit, and sharp sarcasm that could make anyone laugh, even on the hardest days. His ornery eyes and bold honesty were unmistakable, but beneath that tough exterior was a heart devoted to his family and a loyal friend to many.
He proudly served his country in the United States Army before continuing his commitment to service as a police officer and, he had also served time as a security guard for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania at the South Mountain Restoration Center. A dedicated member of the American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Police, Alan carried his sense of duty and discipline throughout his life, balanced by his love of joking, storytelling, and spending time with those closest to him.
Alan’s family remembers him as the strongest man they knew—unyielding, protective, and loving in his own unique way. He experienced many chapters of life, marked by multiple marriages—Rhonda Bolinger being his first, followed by Debra Arndt, Vickie Lawyer, and finally Mary Serino—all of whom loved him deeply and knew well his headstrong spirit.
He is survived by his beloved daughter and “favorite child,” Rebecca Naugle; his son, Richard Bolinger; and his treasured granddaughters, Mya Young and Annika St. Clair and his grandson Harlan Naugle and son in law Monte Naugle who played an important role in caretaking during his last several years of life. He is also survived by his brother, George Bolinger and estranged son Alan Duane Bolinger III. Alan was preceded in death by his siblings, Barbara Jean Brechbiel and Jackie McNerlin, as well as his parents.
In accordance with Alan’s wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. Instead, a cookout in his honor will be held during the Broad Top Worlds Fair in September 2026, a gathering he cherished hosting for family and friends each year prior to his multiple sclerosis rendering him unable. A 21-gun salute will take place at Evan’s Cemetery to commemorate his service.
Though his body weakened in his final years, Alan’s spirit remained unbroken. Surrounded by his daughter and granddaughters—his devoted caregivers during his last six months—he was grateful to spend that time at home, where he could be loved and comforted. He may not have been the man he once was, but he was always a father and a pap—tough, proud, and deeply loved.
