YORK – Donald G. Black, age 77, of York, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2022 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. He was the loving husband of Catherine S. (Steele) Black; together they shared 54 years of marriage.
Donald was born in Huntingdon, PA on September 26, 1944 and was the son of the late Victor “Dick” S. and Alma P. (Mullen) Black. He graduated from Tussey Mountain High School Class of 1962 and later attended Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and York College of Pennsylvania. Donald proudly served his country in the United States Army 4th Infantry Division in the Central Highlands of Vietnam during the Vietnam War for which he was awarded a Bronze Star Medal. He also worked as an operations manager for Caterpillar in York and North Carolina and retired after 32 years of employment. Donald was a member of the F&AM Everett Lodge #524, Top of the Mountain Hunting Club, and the Broad Top Land Lease. He had a great love for his hometown of Broad Top City, PA and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking, and cherished the time he spent with his loving family.
In addition to his loving wife Catherine, Donald is survived by his children Matthew R. Black and wife Kimberly of Irwin, PA, and Melinda B. Wise and husband Steven of York; and his grandchildren Braydon, Chloe, Laykon, Ashlyn, Makenna, and Hunter. He is also survived by his sister Ruth Anne Foore and husband Hilton of York; his niece Deidra Foore; and his nephew Douglas Foore. Donald was preceded in death by his nephew David Foore.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a viewing in celebration of Donald’s life on Thursday, July 7, 2022 from 6:00PM – 8:00PM at Beck Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Inc., of East York, 3670 E. Market St., York, PA 17402. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at 12:00PM at Curtis A. Heath Funeral Home, Inc., 5010 Railroad Ave., Broad Top City, PA 16621 with a viewing from 11:00AM – 12:00PM. He will be laid to rest following the service at Broad Top I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Broad Top, PA with full military honors.
Donald cherished his close relationship with his cousin Bill Black, longtime friend David Lashinsky, and many other friends.
