Gary Lee Black, 77, of Saxton, passed away on July 25, 2024 at the VA Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.
Born in Saxton, Pa on August 8, 1946, a son of the late William A. and Dorthy (Donahoe) Black.
He was a 1965 graduate of Tussey Mt. High School and then joined the U.S. Navy and served as a
hospital corpsman, 2nd class petty officer and served in the Vietnam War.
Following his time in the service, he worked in his families Restaurant as a cook in New Jersey
before returning home to Pennsylvania. He later worked in construction, retiring from Leon E.
Wintermeyer as a heavy equipment operator.
He was a life member of the Saxton Vol. Fire Co. for 46 years serving as fire police lieutenant, a
member of the Huntingdon Co. Firemans Assn., was a Carbon Twp. Supervisor for 42 years, was on
the Dudley - Carbon Twp. Joint Municipal Authority, was a life member of the Saxton VFW, a life
member of the Saxton Sportsmans Assn., was a Cub Master for the Boy Scout Troop 4471, and was
a Camp Master at Putts Camp.
He was an avid hunter, enjoyed camping, tinkering with almost anything and enjoyed spending time
with his grandchildren who he loved so much.
Surviving are his wife Carol (Powers) Black, daughters, Melissa Watkins, wife of Brian, Jennifer
Skipper, wife of Thomas, grandchildren, Alyssa, Karlee, and Kyler, great niece, Nicole Mathews,
great - great nephew, Nicholas Mathews, husband of Hayley and their son Hank. as well as
numerous extended family members.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sisters, Thelma Saracco and p. Lorraine,
brothers, Duane "Billy" Black and Glen W. Black, and a niece, Yolanda Brumbaugh. He was the last
surviving member of his immediate family.
Friends will be received on Thursday, August 1, 2024 from 12 - 2 PM at the funeral home.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2024 at 2 Pm with Pastor C.R. Martin officiating
also at the funeral home.
Interment will take place in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Broad Top City, PA.
