Gary H. Rourke, 86, of Chambersburg, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at Magnolias of Chambersburg.
Born in Wood, PA on April 8, 1937, a son of the late Albert L. and Margaret H. (Black) Rourke.
He was a 1956 graduate of Robertsdale High School where he was vice-president of his graduating class. In 1954 Gary was the only underclassman to start every varsity game on the famed 1954 undefeated Tiger football team that completed the famous 29 game undefeated streak in which covered 3 seasons of R.H.S Tiger football. in 1955 He was elected captain of the Tiger football team during his senior year.
Following high school he served in the United States Army from October of 1956 until October of 1959 as a SP4 (T) E4 receiving the good conduct medal.
He was a life member of VFW Post 1599 in Chambersburg and was of the Protestant Faith.
Surviving are a sister, Laura Wright, wife of Dick, Chambersburg, PA, brothers, Dennis "Butch" Rourke, husband of Peggy of Broad Top City, PA, Robert Rourke, husband of Kay of Massilan, OH, Homer Rourke, husband of Doris, of James Creek, PA, Warren Rourke, husband of Deb of Saxton, PA, as well as his companion Helen Shumaker of Natrona Heights, PA and numerous nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Orla, Gwen, Mary, and brothers, Delmar, Dean, William, and Palmer.
Friends will be received on Monday, June 5, 2023 from 9-11 AM at the Curtis A. Heath Funeral Home Inc. where a funeral service will be held immediately following the visitation with Pastor Jeff Musser officiating, Interment will take place in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Broad Top City, PA with military honors provided by the Broad Top Area Honor Guard.
